Glaive Houston Concert reviews
Franti Love!!!
This man adores the people in the world and every note, every word, every gesture he makes reflects that love. Franti & Spearhead were a high energy, positive vibe, music-sharing, audience-loving, keep-it-going-through-the-rainstorm, melodic celebration. The whole show was kid-friendly. (Little or no inclusion of his more terse and politically charged, rap-style works.)
His subtle nods to the Beatles, the Police, U2 and others (in the form of familiar sampled rifs, a measure or two of lyric and melody, or even an integrated cover) demonstrate his respect for a wide variety of artists, but always, always, he makes the music his own unique blend of reggae-funk-pop-jazzy-rock-world (hard to pigeon-hole this artist), and gives everything he's got. Likewise for every member of his band. He frequently left the stage to "visit" audience members in the seats and on the lawn, making it clear he is grateful for, and wants to be in touch with his fans.
The infectious mirth in his music and the audience gave back to him with equal enthusiasm, rocking neon-lit hula-hoops, dancing in the rain on the lawn, following him through the Pavilion like children trailing a benevolent Pied Piper. Franti's awareness of that energy is as gratifying as his music.
Totally a feel-good concert experience, closing with his invitation to have every kid in the audience join him on stage to sing and dance to "I Love You".....and, of course, a group hug. Can't wait to see him again, and I anticipate eagerly his new CD!
(One small post-concert negative: t-shirts were too expensive, and the credit card machines were not working, so no souvenir for this avid fan.)
